The Difference Helps Hatch Innovation and Creativity

Inspired by the fantastic work that Image Think and their scribe tribe delivered at SXWS this year, Matt Sullivan, Creative Director from The Difference, decided to offer his services to HATCH – a festival that brings bright minds and ground breakers together to explore the roots of creativity and innovation. Matt had a special interest in this festival because of its specific focus on mentorship and education. Plus, it takes place in beautiful Bozeman, Montana each year!

Find below images of the Graphic Capture boards that Matt scribed during each of the keynote talks and panel discussions.

Day 1 – Friday, October 7th, 2011

Sleeping on couches and ditching the things that are holding you back. Blues pianist Andy Frasco, who books himself over 250 shows a year and clearly loves what he does, spoke about the critical role of courage, dedication, and sacrifice in making your own unique dreams a reality.

Inventors David Yakos and Stephen Sanford of Salient Technologies, self-professed “Enginerds,” spoke about the design process and bringing inventions to life.

Christian Long of The Third Teacher, Mike Marriner of Road Trip Nation, architect David Fortin, and Michael Spenser of Studio [Re] spoke about the magic of blurring the lines between learning and life, breaking free of societal expectations, and Death Stars.

Technology pioneer Jim Banister, film producer John Woldenberg, Colette Brooks of Big Imagination Group, and Courtney Johnson of New Global Citizens spoke about what it takes to bring people together to mobilize behind a problem, based on the unwavering foundational belief that your goal is possible.

Mike Marriner, the CEO, Director, and Cofounder of Road Trip Nation talked about how he found himself trekking across the United States in a green Winnebago, interviewing some of the most interesting and inspiring people in the country about how they made their own path a reality. He also spoke about how his organization has enabled hundreds of thousands of young people to take similar journeys to find their own paths and ignite their true passions.

Day 2 – Saturday, October 8th, 2011

Courtney Johnson, Christian Long, and Michael Spenser spoke about their journeys along the road less taken, exploring the barriers that keep others from doing the same, the ever-evolving future that unfolds in front of you when you create possibility, and the sobering reality that the future begs a new model for our young people.

Inventor and entrepreneur Jared Joyce spoke about the roles of commitment, consistency, and emotional detachment in the inventive process. Jared is a dynamo of creative energy and idea generation who now has a range of patents pending and products in stores throughout the U.S.

Jeff Leitner is the innovative founder of the Chicago-based pro bono think tank group Insight Labs. In his keynote talk, Jeff explained that when we do something audacious, we must surround ourselves with people who are equally willing to work without a net. Jeff offered insightful lessons on simple ways to make our ambitions a reality by realizing that, in fact, no one is stopping us.

Industrial designer Evan Twyford shared amazing stories and images from his work designing exploration vehicles for NASA, detailing his creative process. He was then joined on stage by inventors Jared Joyce, David Yakos, and Stephen Sanford, who continued to discuss the creative process and the range of undiscovered territory that we have yet to explore.

Hatch was an incredible experience. An extraordinary landscape of ideas were shared, connections were made, and new interests were ignited. Thanks to all who made it possible. Here’s to keeping those connections and passions for service and mentorship alive.
